“To dream the impossible dream, to fight the unbeatable foe”
Pablo Picasso’s original ink drawing of Don Quixote, entitled Don Quijote y Sancho, was first published in 1955, on the cover of the French literary journal Les Lettres Françaises, in celebration of the 350th anniversary of the first volume of Cervantes’ masterpiece Don Quixote. Le Lettres’ publication of Picasso’s sketch was a high-quality, offset lithograph print, which has since undergone numerous metamorphoses, until it finally reached its present form. This simplified, filled-in, poster-like, black-and-white version of the original India ink drawing by the maestro, has undoubtedly become the most recognizable graphic representation of Spain’s most noble knight.
