A late 16th-century plan of Palmanova, near Udine, Italy (then the Republic of Venice), created and first published by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg upon the completion of the citadel in 1593. The quintessential star fort, Palmanova (Palma or Palma Nova), was built by the Venetians as a rampart against Ottoman attacks at the eastern borders of the Most Serene Republic. Vincenzo Scamozzi, the architect of Palmanova drew inspiration from Filarete’s design of his ideal city of Sforzinda. The map was included in Braun & Hogenberg’s Renaissance mega atlas Civitates Orbis Terrarum. Title cartouche, bottom left, reads: The new city of Palma in Friuli at the gate of the Adriatic Sea built by the Venetians to protect against Barbarian attacks.
