The Declaration of Independence of the United States was written by Thomas Jefferson, with input from John Adams and Benjamin Franklin, and was adopted and ratified by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. It was later engrossed on parchment by Timothy Matlack on August 2, 1776, and signed by all 56 members of Congress.
