Title: Crossing the Great Salt Lake Desert from Simpson’s Spring (Simpson Springs) to Short Cut Pass, Granite Mountain in the Distance. This watercolor illustration is from Captain James H. Simpson’s 1859 Journal of Explorations in Utah (1858 – 1859). The original sketch was drawn in pencil by H. V. A. von Beckh, an artist with Captain Simpson’s expedition; the watercolor was redrawn by John J. Young, a topographer with the War Department. The beautiful sketch shows an unobstructed view from the desert of Granite Mountain near Salt Lake City, with a caravan of wagons moving east in the foreground.
