Brand: Battlemaps.us

A 19th-century map of the 1846–1847 journey of the Mormon Pioneers, from Nauvoo, Illinois, to the Great Salt Lake Valley in Mexico (present-day Utah), where they settled and founded Salt Lake City. Led by Brigham Young, the Saints had traveled in a wagon train, on horseback, and on foot for 18 months, to escape violence and religious persecution in the East. Today, July 24, the day of arrival, is celebrated as Pioneer Day in the state of Utah, and the 1,300-mile route is known as the Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail. The chromolithograph panoramic bird’s-eye view and map was first published in 1899 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the momentous event, and the founding of the State of Deseret in 1849. The full title reads: Route of the Mormon Pioneers From Nauvoo To Great Salt Lake. Feb’y, 1846. July, 1847. (Shown frame in not included. This map is available framed as a separate item in our collection. Another version of the map is available in several different sizes here.)
