A print of the 1790 engraving by Peter Lacour of the Federal Hall in New York City. The image depicts the inauguration of George Washington as the first President of the United States of America on April 30, 1789. Robert Livingston, Chancellor of the State of New York, is administering the oath.
The original building was completed in 1703 and served as City Hall. It was remodeled in the Federal Style in 1788 to serve as the seat of the new Federal Government. From 1789 until 1790 Federal Hall served as the United States’ first capitol building. The first Congress met in this building, passing the Judiciary Act on September 24, 1789 and the Bill of Rights the next day, the 25th of September 1789. After the federal government moved to Philadelphia, the building served as the center of New York city and state government until it was demolished in 1812.
