An eighteenth-century view of the San Giacomo di Rialto square in Venice, drawn by Giovanni Antonio Canal, called Canaletto. Situated in the Rialto district, with the iconic Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto) seen in the background, Chiesa San Giacomo di Rialto is considered the oldest church in Venice, dating back to 421. The area outside of the church, known as Campo San Giacomo di Rialto, has been historically the centre of the Venetian banking industry. The Campo, where in the middle ages bankers and money changers used to sit under the portico waiting for customers, is the birthplace of concepts such as “bill of exchange” and “currency exchange”. Canaletto drew his masterful sketch of the campo some time after it was paved in 1758.
