A stunning panoramic watercolor view of Valleta’s Grand Harbour in 1858, facing the seaward harbor entrance, Birgu (Vittoriosa) and Senglea on the right side, and Floriana on the left. Valletta proper is also on the left, behind Floriana’s fortifications. The author of the drawing, Admiral Sir Edward Gennys Fanshawe, GCB, was a prominent officer in the Royal Navy, and a gifted artist in his spare time. Fanshawe commanded the HMS Centurion at the time, stationed at the Malta dockyard. The author’s own hand-inscribed caption of the drawing reads: “Piazza Maggiore, Florian, and Grand Harbour, from our house, Malta, Jany 1858”.
