This thematic map details the advance of Napoleon's Coalition Army invasion of Russia in 1812 to punish Czar Alexander for withdrawing Russia from the continental system. Over 450,000 European soldiers of the Grand Armee’ crossed the Neman River in June 1812, starting a campaign that would end in disaster for Napoleon and his soldiers. The map follows the movements of Napoleon’s (yellow and grey) and Russians' (green) Corps and marks major battles with crossed sabers. Napoleon’s route is marked in red. Although Napoleon captured Moscow, Czar Alexander refused to surrender and the Russian winter in the end forced Napoleon to retreat. Only 20,000 men returned.
