Fra Mauro’s Mappa Mundi from the 1450s Fra Mauro’s World Map is generally regarded as one of the most important cartographical documents ever produced. It is the earliest known modern map of the world. The circular planisphere, composed by the Venetian monk Fra Mauro around 1450, (in his workshop on Murano Island in Venice), represents the foremost geographical knowledge of the world at the time. The map is oriented with south at the top, and describes in astonishing detail the known world from a European perspective. Today, the original (close to 8 x 8 ft, or, 240 cm in side), is kept at the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice.
