Caribbean, 1703 (1750s), Theater of War, European Claims, Covens & Mortier Map
Brand: Battlemaps.us
A visually striking large-size map of the Caribbean and Central America, with elaborate cartouches, naval battles and insets of Havana, Portobello, Veracruz, and the Isthmus of Panama. Native laborers are shown mining gold in the mountains, while on the shore below Europeans pack jewels and gold bars into a treasure chest; routes of the Spanish gold and silver fleets are shown as well. The map was crated by Pieter Mortier around 1703, to depict the Theater of War in America during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714), as well as the territorial claims and holdings of the European powers (Spain, England, France and the Dutch Republic) in the New World at the time. The map was issued again half a century later by his son Cornelius Mortier, and by Johannes Covens — the two founders of the Covens & Mortier publishing company in Amsterdam — in the midst of the French and Indian War (Seven Years’ War), to depict the Theater of War in Central America and the Caribbean.
