World War II era map of Kent, designed and drawn by Ernest Clegg by the end of the war. The pictorial map was a part of a series drawn by Clegg in recognition of the war effort. It also celebrates the rich heritage, agriculture, and outstanding natural beauty of the Garden of England. The layout is adorned with seals, coats of arms, insignia, and blocks of text. In the lower left corner, a quote from Sir Winston Churchill’s Aug. 20, 1940 speech heralds the sentiment of gratitude towards the members of the Royal Air Force involved in the battle: “…Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”
